Wirksworth Museum
Innovative approach to designing a new museum in a three-storey house
Our designs are bespoke to meet each set of challenges. At Wirksworth Museum we were appointed to deliver a new museum in a three-storey house set within the town centre. The rooms for the museum are of domestic proportions with historic features. We took an innovative approach to designing museum exhibitions with museum-standard showcases that would fit into small spaces, allowing visitors to move between the exhibits and still be able to see the building. Each room has a clearly defined story linking showcases and graphic panels. Graphics are smaller, a tight narrative is told through carefully designed graphic panels to make best use of space and hands-on exhibits were designed to fit into the spaces. Each was carefully considered to make sure it worked hard and helped to deliver the outcomes required. We made use of a tight space to make a crawl-through for children to recreate the Dream Cave where a woolly rhino was discovered.
