Wirksworth Museum
Innovative approach to designing a new museum in a three-storey house
Our designs are bespoke to meet each set of challenges. At Wirksworth Museum we were appointed to deliver a new museum in a three storey house set within the town centre. The rooms for the museum are of domestic proportions with historic features. We took an innovative approach to designing museum exhibitions with museum standard showcases that would fit into small spaces, allowing visitors to move between the exhibits and still be able to see the building. Each room has a clearly defined story linking showcases and graphic panels. Graphics are smaller, a tight narrative is told through carefully designed graphic panels to make best use of space and hands on exhibits were designed to fit into the spaces, each was carefully considered to make sure it worked hard and helped to deliver the outcomes required. We made use of a tight space to make a crawl through for children to recreate the Dream Cave where a woolly rhino was discovered.
